Maggie's Misstep
#1
I recently wrote a story centering around the character of Maggie from the Walking Dead.  The text below depicts a scene where Maggie is shot with a tranquilizer dart by a group of females who are attempting to take her prisoner.  Link to the full story is below the excerpt.  Enjoy:

“Chapter 5”

********************

As Maggie followed the older woman to the infirmary, a young girl accidentally ran into her.  The small child fell to the ground but quickly hopped up as she began dusting herself off.

“Oh, I’m so sorry,” Maggie apologized, even though it wasn’t her fault.  “Are you okay?”

“Yes,” the girl nodded, straightening her gown.

“That’s such a pretty dress you have,” Maggie complimented.

“Thank you,” the girl smiled.

“I’m Maggie, by the way.  Nice to meet you.”

“Hi, Maggie.”

“And what’s your name?”

Another girl’s voice bellowed from across the common area.  “READY OR NOT, HERE I COME!”

The little girl’s eyes grew wide as she sprinted away to find a hiding spot.  “My name’s Paula!” she yelled to Maggie as she disappeared behind a staggered sea of tents.

Maggie paused for a moment.   Her eyes scrupulously surveyed the environment.  Females were everywhere.  Young, old.  Fat, thin.  Short, tall,  Black, white.  There were women everywhere, from all walks of life, but not one single male to be seen.

“Just over here, my dear,” the old lady motioned.

Maggie snapped out of her trance and followed the woman into a nearby tent.

“Okay,” she continued.  “Now let’s get down to business.”

Maggie looked around the tent.  It was empty except for two chairs.  The old woman sat down into one of them.

“This is the infirmary?” Maggie skeptically questioned.

“This?  Oh no, this isn’t the infirmary.”

An expression of concern crept across Maggie’s face.

“Here, take a seat,” the woman motioned toward the empty chair beside her.

“No, I think I’m good,” Maggie replied.

“Oh, please.  Take off your shoes.  Relax.  Join us for dinner.  Then we’ll get you what you need from the infirmary.”

Maggie cautiously walked backwards.

“I’m truly grateful for the offer, but I really need to be getting back now.  Somebody’s life depends on it.”

“I totally understand, my dear.  But I thought this was all very clear.”

“You thought what was very clear?” Maggie questioned.

“Well, it’s written plain as day when you walked in.  It’s Us vs. Them, my dear.  And if you’re not one of Us, then you must be one of Them.”

“One of who???” Maggie puzzled.

“Anyone who’s not a Paula.”

“A what?”

“A Paula, my dear.”

Maggie continued walking backwards.

“I have no idea what the hell you’re talking about.”

“It’s easier if you don’t think of Paula as a name.  It’s more of a religion.  A way of life.”

“Okay…”

“So, are you sure you don’t want to join us?” the woman smiled with a sinister grin.

Maggie turned to exit the tent but three large women stood directly in front of her.

“Where do you think you’re going?” one of them asked.

“I’m getting the fuck out of here, that’s where.”

“So you’re one of Them?” another spoke.

“One of who???” Maggie yelled.

“One of Them,” replied the third.

“Chapter 6”

********************

Maggie reached into her belt and unsheathed the oversized hunting knife.

“Stay back you fucking psychos!” she yelled, slashing her knife in a criss-crossing pattern.

All three females ducked out of the way, clearing a path for Maggie to escape.  She immediately sprinted toward the front entrance as every woman in the village observed in silence.

Paula!” the older woman yelled as she casually sauntered out from the empty tent.

An armed female in a security turret acknowledged the call.

The older woman placed her index finger and thumb between her lips and exhaled a sharp, high-pitched whistle.  The female in the tower nodded before pointing her rifle toward Maggie.

“Let me out!” Maggie screamed, banging on the security gate.  “Somebody, OPEN THE DOOR!!!”

Every woman in the village quietly smiled.

The female in the tower closed one eye before focusing the rifle’s crosshairs on the center of Maggie’s back.  She slid her finger over the trigger, squeezing tighter and tighter until...

**THWIP**

A tiny metallic dart with a fluffy red tail raced toward Maggie.

**THMP**

The projectile pierced Maggie directly between her shoulder blades.  She barely felt the tiniest prick, but immediately swung around to see who was behind her.  There wasn’t a living soul within thirty feet.

“Who was that???” she yelled.

Nobody spoke.

Maggie continued brandishing her knife in a menacing fashion.

“I said, who was that!”  she demanded.

A small numbing sensation spread across her back.

“I said who!” she screamed, as the tingling intensified.

Maggie looked behind her to see what was happening, but the placement of the dart prevented her from seeing its location.  Pins and needles trickled down her spine, quickly spreading toward her thighs and calves.

“What’s the hell is happening...” she thought to herself as she started to stagger.

Every woman remained perfectly still.

“Something’s...not right…”

Maggie’s entire body buzzed with a prickly, numbing hum.  The women around her continued to grin.

“Stay back!” Maggie wobbled, slashing the knife sluggishly as the landscape in front of her started to spin.

“Gotta get out of here…”

Maggie looked for an alternative exit as her equilibrium rapidly evaporated.

“I said BACK!” she yelled, slashing the knife with all she could muster.

The older woman placed her fingers back into her mouth and exhaled another screeching whistle.  The girl in the turret nodded.

**THWIP**

A second dart made its way into Maggie’s left breast.  After a brief delay, Maggie slashed her knife diagonally.

“Who...who was that…” she staggered, slashing the knife again but in the opposite direction.

“...who...who was that…”

Maggie looked down and noticed the metallic dart protruding from her breast.  She removed it as quickly as possible before throwing it to the ground.

“What the...whoa…”

Maggie’s vision spun faster and faster as it started to blur.  She fought against gravity to maintain her balance.

“I said…” she mumbled drowsily.  “...stay...stay back…”

Maggie desperately tried to focus, but her vision continued to spiral.

“...stub...sthay...back…”

She slashed the knife again, but her lack of balance forced her down to all fours.

“...back…” she repeated, now staring directly at the ground.

“...must...stay...awake…”

“...I said...back…” she whispered as a thin line of drool dripped from her lips.

Maggie’s palms gently slid forward, forcing her head and upper chest onto the dirt ground.

“...buh…” she moaned as her dilated eyes crossed back and forth.

Maggie’s upper body became dead weight as her ass sat high in the air.  The handle of the oversized hunting knife rested loosely in the palm of her left hand.

“...bbhhhh…” she exhaled as her eyelids fluttered.

“stuh...bhk…”

Maggie’s labored exhalations formed tiny dust clouds against the loose dirt on the ground beneath her.

The smiling women slowly crept forward.

“..ssshbkk…” Maggie whimpered as everything around her swirled into darkness.
